Eccentric Training is training that part of your muscle that acts as your safety mechanism and prevents injuries.
That “safety mechanism” of your muscle is what prevents you from falling down the stairs, and how you “catch” yourself if you trip or stub your toe.
This function of your muscle prevents injuries and is what enables you to not fall.
Eccentric contractions happen when the muscle lengthens under tension. They occur whenever you are absorbing force and decelerating (slowing down) such as:
- Landing from a jump or in the landing phase of walking/running
- Walking down stairs
- Changing direction while running
- The slow lowering of weight, like the downward movement of weight lifting
